10 Ways to Avoid Fraud
Scam artists in the U.S. and around the world defraud millions of people each year. They use the phone, email, postal mail, and the internet to trick you into sending money or giving out personal information. Here are 10 things you can do — or not — to stop a scam.
- Install a vehicle alarm or mechanical lock for the steering wheel or ignition.
- Always lock the doors and leave the windows rolled up.
- Always activate any auto alarms or anti-theft devices.
- Keep valuables out of sight. Expensive items in full view invite theft even if the vehicle is locked. Don’t advertise the types of equipment you have in your vehicle.
- Place valuable items in your trunk not the front or back seats.
- Know the license number, year, make and model of your vehicle.
- Do not leave money, checkbooks, or credit cards in the vehicle at any time.
- Secure your Social Security number (SSN). Don’t carry your Social Security card in your wallet. Only give out your SSN when necessary.
- Don’t share personal information (Birthdate, Social Security number, or bank account number) because someone asks for it.
- Collect mail every day. Place a hold on your mail when you are away from home for several days.
- Lock it up. In many states, gun owners who don’t appropriately secure their guns can be liable if someone takes the gun and causes injury. Get a gun safe or other locked cabinet to store your guns when you aren’t using them.
- Keep the keys hidden. There’s no point in locking up your gun if you leave the keys next to the safe. Don’t let others know where the key is unless it’s an emergency. If you give the information to a “friend” who later uses the gun in a crime, you could run into some legal problems.
